Music

Having a ministry of music in the church dates all of the way back to the time of King David in the Old Testament era. At the direction of the Holy Spirit he established a music ministry that employed several thousand persons who were gifted for music. Leaders were appointed who were accountable to the King himself. They organized and trained those who served the Tabernacle and, later, Temple ministries, so the music of worship would be done skillfully, reverently and inspiringly.

Principles of Our Music Ministry

With the sound principles of that ministry, and the wonderful model that heavenly worship offers us, we affirm that:

  • Our ministry is to provide musical leadership of the church family in the worship of God (1 Chronicles 25:1).
  • We are to assist in the mutual exhortation and encouragement of one another through spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:1920Colossians 3:16).
  • We are to provide training for all ages in church music so all individuals and ensembles will be well prepared for ministry (1 Chronicles 15:2225:7).
  • We are to be a ministry of the church through which those gifted for music can exercise their gifts for the benefit of the church family. (1 Corinthians12:7-1114:26).
  • We should keep before us the importance of glorifying God rather than ourselves in our music making.

ADULT CHOIR

For more than 125 years there has been an adult choir in our worship. The choir consists of volunteers who love to give their time and talent to lead the congregational song. While we have some who are trained professionals, the majority are folks who have simply grown up singing in choirs and feel called to serve here week in and week out.

Our choir sings for both morning worship services each Sunday, with rehearsals on Wednesday evenings from 5:50 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The choir membership averages 80-85 people. Membership is open to any who have some gift for singing and a desire to share this gift in worship.

Those interested are encouraged to email worship@fpcjackson.org.

The FPC String Ensemble is a group of student, semi-professional, and professional string players who play occasionally for our Sunday evening worship services. For more information call the Music Minister at 601-353-8316.

STUDENT CHOIR

Consisting of students from the sixth grade through high school, along with college mentors, the Student Choir makes a significant contribution to the life of the congregation by singing often for the Evening Worship.

The Student Choir takes several trips a year regionally and beyond to sing for other congregations. They have ventured as far as Washington, D.C., St. Louis, and New York City.

The Choir rehearses on Sunday afternoons during the school term at 4:30 PM in the Music Suite. Students interested in singing with them are invited to come to rehearsals.

Music of Christmas

Invite your friends and neighbors to our beloved annual service of Christmas lessons and carols led by the FPC Choir and accompanied by a symphony orchestra, December 21, at 4 and 6 p.m. A nursery will be available for children three years old and younger.
