Before Preaching: Preparing to hear the Word
WLC 160: “It is required of those that hear the word preached, that they attend upon it with diligence, preparation, and prayer…”
1. Pray for the preacher as he prepares to preach during the week.
2. Read the passage in advance.
3. Pray for a receptive and teachable heart.
4. Take steps to put your house in order at least by Saturday night.
5. Bring your own Bibles to church.
During Preaching: Becoming an Active Listener
WLC 160: Hearers are to “examine what they hear by the scriptures; receive the truth with faith, love, meekness, and readiness of mind, as the word of God.”
1. Pray!
2. Cultivate godly affections that correspond to the truth.
3. Remind yourself that God is talking.
4. Examine what you hear.
5. Make notes.
After Preaching: Bearing Fruit
WLC 160: “meditate, and confer of it; hide it in [our] hearts, and bring forth the fruit of it in [our] lives.”
1. Meditate on the truth
2. Confer with others about the message
3. Memorize what matters most.
4. Develop an action plan.
