In Colossians, the apostle Paul calls Christians to “let the Word of God dwell in you richly” (3:16). There is no better way to do this than to commit God’s word to memory. What a blessing it is, in the midst of hardship, times of joy, or moments of fear, to be able to recall the unchanging truth of God’s Word and the eternal comfort it offers. It is vital, as we face temptations and perplexity, that we are able to remind ourselves of God’s good commands found clearly expressed in His Word. And how marvelous it is, as we encounter guilt and shame from our very real sin and failure, to be able to cling to the promises in scripture secured by our suffering Savior and risen King. We need God’s Word to be etched into our hearts and minds, and so our encouragement to you is to set aside time to begin to memorize even small portions of Scripture. Doing this will certainly be a great blessing to you.
